Here's a number with a goofy name: the googol. A googol is a 1 followed by 100 zeros. Picture a 1 with zero after zero after zero behind it, a hundred times in a row. Try saying that fast!

The name has a fun backstory. A math professor named Edward Kasner wanted a name for this huge number. So he asked his nephew, Milton Sirotta. Milton was 9 years old. The boy was sure the number wasn't infinity, so he figured it should have a real name. His idea was "googol." The name stuck, and grown-up mathematicians still use it today.

So how big is a googol? Way bigger than anything you could ever count. Say you counted one number every second. You wouldn't get anywhere close, not in your whole life, and not in a giant stack of lifetimes after that either.

And Milton wasn't done! At the same time, he came up with a name for an even bigger number. His uncle later decided that number, the googolplex, is a 1 followed by a googol of zeros. That's a zero for every single number in a googol!

So kids can do real math. They can even come up with a name that sticks around for about a hundred years.

Ask your kid: If you got to name a brand new giant number, what would you call it?
